Plant name Description
Acacia retinodes [T H/HH] ** One of the hardier acacias, also known as 'Wirilda', a fast growing tree for a sheltered spot. Flat leathery leaves [phyllodes] rather than the feathery foliage of some species such as A dealbata. Flowers over a long period in summer. Information of Acacias
Agastache nepetoides [P H] 'Giant Yellow Hyssop.' A US native of sunny wood edges and clearings. Needs moist but well draining soil to do well. Tall growing, up to 6 feet [1.6m] with spikes of off-white to yellow flowers. Perennial. Bee plant.
Allium [H Bb]
tuberosum** Chinese Chives

A tip-top 'onion' for the later summer-autumn border. Flattish umbels of white flowers go on for ages and attract bees and butterflies. The flowers are sweetly scented with an onion twist! Eventually builds up substantial clumps to 20 - 34 ins [50-80cms] in height in flower. Works well for both cottage and naturalistic styles.

Aquilegia [P H]
'Milk and Honey'
**

Granny's Bonnets very much a 'cottage garden', plant well loved and reliable.
Cream sweetly scented
spurred flowers, Height in flower 24-30ins. [60cm]
Buddleja [Sh/T H]**
davidii 'Border Beauty'

davidii 'Nanho Blue'

auriculata

loricata

saligna

The 'Butterfly Bush' - more to come later in the growing season.
A lovely rich violet-red

Finer leaved and looser growing than other B.davidii cultivars, thinnish spikes of intense deep purple-blue.

'Weeping Sage' an evergreen buddleja with parchment coloured sweetly scented flowers through the winter in the UK. Sadly doesn't really fulfill its insect attracting potential here as it does South Africa.

Another evergreen buddleja, with thick nubbly leaves, white underneath. Off white/cream flowers in summer, has proved to be pretty hardy so far in S.Somerset.

'False Olive' or 'Lelothwane'. Evergreen with white 'puffy' flowers. Apparently used to treat coughs and colds. The flowers attract bees and moths. Detail
Centaurea kotschyana [P H] ** European native, Lowish growing, very dark purple waxy 'thistly' heads and a noticable sweet scent. Moistish soil in sun.
Colquhounia coccinea var vestita [Sh H/HH] From the Himalayas and SW China, in sheltered situations can make a somewhat fast growing large shrub. Deep orange flowers, oddly scented foliage Detail
Coronilla valentina glauca 'Citrina' [Sh H/HH] Stoically flowers through winter into spring unless really hard hit by frost. Pale lemon flowers over glaucous foliage. Detail
Cosmos [P H/HH] atrosanguineus What can I say? 'Chocolate Cosmos' Detail

Dianthus
barbatus 'Nigricans' [B]**

superbus [P]**
'Crimsonia'
'Spooky'

Pinks [P]
'Bridal Veil'

'Ursula le Grove'

'Argus'

This Sweet William really does stop you in your tracks, deepest purple foliage and very red flowers, Biennial to short lived perennial.

The pink version [Large Pink] is native to France, Germany and Scandinavia in dry and sometimes shady places. 'Crimsonia' has deep red very fringed flowers. Not that many denizens of the red border carry fragrance [roses and sweetpeas spring to mind] so a pleasing addition. Quite happy in open sunny borders. 'Spooky' shades of white, pink, lilac and red!

One of my favourites - possibly C17th, very doubled and fringed white petals with a dark red blotch in the centre. Well scented.
Strong greeny-silver foliage. Single fringed flowers with distinct deep red markings. Well scented.
Very silver compact foliage single white flowers with a maroon central ring. Well scented.

Erysimum [B/P] Wallflower
'Blood Red'
[SOLD OUT]
'Aurora'
'Harpur Crewe'

Who can resist one of the first really scented flowers of the year?
A rich intense red.
Apricot with pink and orange shading.
One of the 'old' doubles. Small spikes of yellow flowers. Makes a neat evergreen bush. Keep going from cuttings.
Euphorbia
mellifera [Sh H/HH] **
Not the 'normal' sort of Euphorbia.Waxy red, honey scented 'flowers' in late Spring. Not totally hardy. Detail
Foeniculum vulgare [P]** 'Purpureum' Purple Fennel, in time the purple-bronze feathery foliage makes a stately airy presence 6 - 7 feet tall. Lovely when the yellow seed heads contrast with the foliage in the red border.
Galium odoratum [P]** Woodruff
A major carpeter, useful in dry shade, it is invasive so better kept to less formal areas. White cross stitch flowers in May over whorls of green foliage.
Hedychium spicatum [HH/Bb]**
Perhaps not the flashiest member of the ginger family, spidery white flowers in late summer. Grows to 2 - 3 feet [90cm] in a pot with a bit of liquid feeding good when other things begin to look tired. Detail
Heptacodium miconioides [Sh/T ]** A vigorous late flowering shrub. Detail
Hesperis matronalis 'Albiflora' [P H] ** Dame's Violet Coarse fuzzy foliage gives rise to simple single white flowers on tall stems, hide it away but enjoy the wafting scent especially towards evening in May - June.
Hosta [P H]
plantaginea **
Detail
Glossy apple green leaves and scented white trumpet flowers in Sept/Oct.
Hyacinthoides non-scripta [Bb H] ** Bluebell The English bluebell. Gorgeous blue-violet delicate downward facing bells and sweet scent, the essence of a spring woodland. This is the proper bluebell and not the dumpy inelegant Spanish bluebell which is potentially crossing with and threatening our native bluebell. These are not taken from the wild.
Hyssopus officinalis [P H] The most gorgeous deep blue flowers and a wonderful bee plant.

Ipomea Morning Glory
alba [Cl HH]**

Ipomea bona-nox is another name for this twining tender climber [perennial only in warmer climes]. Large white flowers untwist as it gets dark and extra bonus, a strong pleasant scent accompanies the huge blooms.

Iris [Bb H]

Low growing foliage with large purple backed, white scented trumpets in July and August. Best in a pot, 8 - 10 ins high in flower.
Scented bronzy orange trumpets flowering slightly later in July than L.regale. Height 24 - 30 inches.
Deep gold trumpets also later than L. regale
Dusky pink
Completely white trumpets
Late flowers open white, heavily speckled with red, scented, acid soil.

Leonurus cardiaca [P H] Motherwort, grown for centuries for female complaints. Flowering in August, whorls of white or pinkish purple flowers [typical of the labiate family]. Pungent foliage. One for the wilder areas.
Lupinus 'Plummy Blue' [Sh H] From Plantworld seed. Said to be a cross between a blue tree lupin and red russell lupin, its form erring on the shrubby side. We shall see. Small plants
Matthiola incana [B]** Perennial Stock Silvered whorls of leaves topped by multiple heads of single white flowers. Should overwinter in a sheltered warm spot, flowering in May - June. Can be ungainly, the rosette of leaves topping a thick bared stem, but worth it for the heavy scent.
Mirabilis jalapa [P HH] ** The so called Four o'clock Flower as it doesn't open until later in the day and stays open all night, so presumably a moth attractant? Mixed shades and scented, can be lifted and over wintered like a dahlia.
Monarda [P H]**
Bergamot

'Adam'
'Mahogany'
'Snow Queen'
'Bee Balm' or Bergamot, originally from the US, the pleasantly scented foliage is an added bonus especially when weeding. Moist soil in sun.

Cherry red.

Nepeta [P H]**
parnassica
'Six Hills Giant'

A big one, over 4ft [1.5m], purply flowers and aromatic foliage.
So well known, large growing, sprawling, misty blueish flowers for months. Classic underplanting for roses. Watch out for cats in spring!
Nicotiana sylvestris [A B]** From the woods of Argentina, tall growing, sticky hairy pungent leaves and sprays of downward facing white flowers. Scented especially towards evening when the white flowers shine out in lowering light.
Passiflora x 'Constance Elliott' [Cl P H/HH]** Passion Flower, from open pollinated seed so may be white or the normal P caerulea with blue markings. Vigorous and evergreen in a sheltered spot.
Pelargonium [P HH]
triste

lobatum

Softly fuzzy carroty leaves with greeny yellow and brown flowers, night scented.Tuberous roots.
Another tuberous rooted night scented geranium, blackish maroon and yellow flowers.
The plants should be allowed to go dormant after flowering and started back into growth in September. Main flowering March - May inside.

Reseda odorata [A]**
Mignonette
Not much to look at, but the yellow/green flower tufts give off a strong pleasant scent. In addition to growing in the summer border, can be grown in pots to enjoy through the winter months. Plant it somewhere that you sit in the garden.
Salvia
uliginosa
[P H/HH]**

aurea [africana-lutea] [P HH]

Long waving stems topped with short heads of the skyest blue flowers. Height 6 feet [180cm] or more! Detail
South African seed, tan flowers over grey foliage a bit unusual.
Spiranthes cernua odorata 'Chadds Ford' [P H] A US relative of our native orchid Spiranthes spiralis called 'Nodding Lady's Tresses'. Spikes of white closed lipped flowers twisting up the green stems. Moistish soil not too alkaline. Autumn flowering. Detail

Tropaeolum [A/P HH]
Nasturtium

'Hermine Grashoff'

Another favourite. I allow the trailing types to self-seed providing a riot of oranges in late summer until the first frosts.

Lovely double nasturtium, shaggy orange petals probably best grown in pots to either trail down or be trained up a support. Detail

Tulbaghia acutiloba [Bb H/HH] Another allium, this one from South Africa, orange and purple flowers - should be interesting - small plants from seed @ -7°C, some sources suggest it is not hardy and should be overwintered inside.
Tulipa [Bb H]
'Queen of Night' [SOLD OUT]

sylvestris [SOLD OUT]

Deepest black-purple single flowers - add instant drama to planters and borders

A woodland tulip, small yellow flowers and scented, may or may not be native to Britain.

Verbena bonariensis [P H/HH] **
